On the heels of our post about reducing food waste in your restaurant, we came across this interview with Meghan Stasz, director of sustainability for the Grocery Manufacturers’ Association. In it, she explains how sustainable packaging is a first step in reducing food waste.
For obvious reasons, packaging is an important first step towards reducing food waste by keeping food fresh as long as possible. The challenge with creating sustainable packaging lies in the need to reduce spoilage while still creating a product that, in the words of Greener Package, optimizes recycled/renewable material as well as the use of energy.
An interesting question, to be sure. Yes, we want food as fresh as possible—but we’re increasingly aware of the need to reduce waste generally.
What do you think? How do you deal with packaging waste? Any suggestions?
